4 DAYS/3 NIGHTS

Easter Island and Rapa Nui

Easter Island is considered the world’s largest open air museum and one of the most enigmatic places on earth. The moai, monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people, characterise the island. Here, we will discover Rano Kau and its striking crater lake, the Rano Raraku (Moai statue quarry), where almost all moai statues were carved, and Anakena, a white coral sand beach on Rapa Nui. Additionally, we will explore Terevaka, the largest, tallest and youngest of three main extinct volcanoes.

DAY

1

Rano Kau, Orongo Vlg. & Ana Kai Tangata

We will take a flight to Easter Island. In the afternoon, we will start exploring the town of Hanga Roa, encountering spectacular ‘moais’ at every turn; famous human figures carved on rock between the years 1250 and 1500. Then, we will hike to the shocking 3000ft. crater of Rano Kao, which has a lagoon in its interior. Following a short Orongo Village visit, our expedition continues to the cave Ana Kai Tangata, famous for its ancient representations of Manutara (terns) and the painted walls.

DAY

2

Rano Raraku & Calypso Anakena Beach

Today, our expedition begins at the Vinapu ceremonial center, where the Ahu Tahira, a large stone platform was built with perfection similar to that of Machu Picchu. We will learn about the moais’ construction process and transportation. We will then visit the impressive Rano Raraku quarry, where the Rapa Nui people carved the giant statues. Here, we will also appreciate various unfinished ‘moais’. We will then drive to Calypso Anakena beach. On the way, we will see more petroglyphs, moais that were left under construction or in transit, caves and many shrines of the Rapa Nui culture. Anakena is the most important beach of Eastern Island with its white sand and clear turquoise water.

DAY

3

Terevaka, Ana Kekenga Cave & Ahu Te Peu

Today, we will explore the west coast of the Island, going to the Ana Kakenga Cave; on the way here we will find caves, petroglyphs, ‘ahus’ (shrines) where ‘moais’ stand and also different types of ‘vaka’ or Polynesian houseboats. The cave is known as the Cave of the Two Windows because there are two natural made windows made of stone. Later, we visit the ancestral village of Ahu Te Peu, where people built houses shaped like boats. We will continue towards Puna Pau quarry, where reddish Pukaos – hat-like structures carved from scoria (red volcanic rock), were produced and placed on top of the ‘moais.’ We will end the day at the lava tunnels and caves, used by ancient Rapa Nui, to guard in time of war.

DAY
